Schiaparelli
Creative and joyous designer Elsa Schiaparelli dominated the 30s with her organic, highly original designs. Schiaparelli was born in Rome in 1809. She was always interested in art. As a teenager, she published her collection of poetry. As she moved more into the fashion world, she used her creativity by playing around with unusual materials making out of this world, unique creations. One unique creation was the shoe hat which was a collaboration with Salvador Dali. The thought of shoes on your head is ridiculous, right? Well, surprisingly she pulled this design off. This makes me question how far we can go with fashion. Is there such a thing as underwear bandanas? Who knows. She was one of the first designers to find potential in zippers for fashion, and the famous pink-magenta shade "Shocking Pink" was created by adding a touch of white to magenta. You can see Shocking Pink in some of her most famous designs such as The Tears Dress which was also designed with Salvador Dali for the circus collection of 1938, and her Shocking Pink Suit which showcased the rise of masculine woman clothing and her use of unusual fabrics and unique embellishments. Other amazing designs by Schiaparelli are the 1950s pillbox hat, 1950s gold fringed ear clips, and my favorite 1950s gold and silver wedge shoes. In 1954 she stopped designing and published her autobiography Shocking Life. She spent her retired years in beautiful Tunisia, and in Paris, at eighty- three she went to heaven. May she rest in peace, and so does her beautiful soul. Her designs were lively and full of creativity. It's an art we can all truly appreciate. Her name will live on and so will the famous shade, Shocking Pink.
